Do I need any special software to study online?
No, all you need is access to the Internet and an Internet browser. Your online units are on the web so you can access your class from anywhere you have access to the Internet.
Do I have to be online at the same time as my lecturer and fellow students?
In general no. Most learning activities are asynchronous – meaning you can contribute to the activity at a time that suits you. However, sometimes your lecturer may suggest a ‘real time’ class discussion but this will only happen in consultation with the class.
Will I feel like part of a class?
Your lecturer will design activities for your class to assist you in getting to know each other and building an online learning community. You will find that you do get to know fellow students and that you all help each other by learning together.
How much time does it take?
This will depend on things like your prior knowledge in the subject, your reading and writing speeds, your interest in wider reading. It will also depend on your particular course. Please refer to the course outline or speak to your lecturer about expectations.
How can I access the library?
The library has a wealth of online resources – from full text journals to databases to online tutorials to help you learn how to use the library. There are also off-campus and interlibrary loans and reciprocal borrowing rights at other libraries.
Do I have to come to the university at all?
This will depend on your course – some courses might require you to attend a residential or practical sessions.
