Preparing to teach online

Teaching online requires some special skills and knowledge, both pedagogical and technical.

To be fully prepared if you are teaching a web-enhanced unit, you will need to be able to:

  • create your online unit (via the eLearning Staff Portal)
  • use the template and some tools in the ACU Learning Management System (LMS), called Blackboard
  • explain the purpose of the online unit to your students
  • keep your online unit organised and up-to-date to complement your face-to-face teaching
  • ensure your online unit adds value to your students’ learning.

If you are teaching a fully online unit your online unit will be created for you by ACUonline. Additional support is provided to you as you will need to be able to:

  • use a wide range of Blackboard tools
  • design your unit for effective online learning
  • understand and meet the specific needs of fully online learners
  • explore and embrace new technologies that will enhance online teaching.

The Learning and Teaching Centre (LTC) offers regular on-campus workshops each semester and an online tutorial to assist you in developing these skills. There are also Faculty eLearning Coordinators and Online Educational Designers to assist you on an individual basis. See Training & tutorial
