September 2012 onwards: New vision for CanberraThe 2011 Canberra review, while highlighting the importance of the Canberra Campus to the wider community, also identified a range of challenges facing the Campus. These included: increased competition in the Canberra marketplace; unsustainable student numbers; a backlog of potentially costly maintenance issues; and a lower than ideal market profile.
On Tuesday 4 September, the Vice-Chancellor of Australian Catholic University (ACU) announced the establishment of a new role at the University, Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, tasked with researching, developing and implementing a new model for the Canberra Campus.
The model will not only identify the strengths of the Canberra Campus, but determine how the University can leverage off those strengths to build a more sustainable and robust campus in the nation’s capital. It will require investment and the full engagement of the wider Catholic community.
The Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, who has been appointed by the Vice-Chancellor in consultation with the Chancellor General Peter Cosgrove AC, MC, is David Craig – currently Director, Marketing and External Relations at ACU.
Associate Professor Patrick McArdle will continue as Campus Dean (Canberra).
Preliminary work has already commenced, with a considerable amount of research and analysis underway.
A Steering Group has formed to provide governance, leadership and direction for development and implementation of a new vision for Signadou. The Steering Group will be chaired by the Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor and include the following members: Executive Deans, a senior representative for the Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and senior representative for the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students, Learning and Teaching).
As per the Working Party’s recommendation, a Consultation Group has also been established with key representatives from across the Canberra Campus (listed below). The role of the Consultation Group is to represent all staff across the Campus and provide feedback and input in to the Campus plan as it moves forward. The Group met with the Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor on Friday 7 September, and will continue to meet with him on a regular basis.
The Consultation Group consists of:
- Ms Rachael Bahl, Senior Librarian (Electronic Resources) and National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) representative
- Dr Alan Cadwallader, Senior Lecturer, School of Theology
- Mrs Jane Douglas, Lecturer, School of Nursing
- Ms Petra Hastings, Lecturer, Faculty of Education
- Ms Maria Hegerty, Executive Manager, Office of Student Success
- Ms Susan Love, Manager, Campus Operations
- Associate Professor Patrick McArdle, Campus Dean
- Ms Dimity May, Marketing Coordinator (Canberra)
- Professor Morag McArthur, Director, Institute of Child Protection Studies
The Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor will be spending significant time on Canberra Campus over the coming months. The team supporting him in his work will be confirmed over the coming days and it is expected that the new vision for Canberra will be finalised by the end of the year.
There will be consultations scheduled throughout this process – with researchers, students, staff and community partners. There will also be regular updates sent via email and posted on this website.
