Celebrating National Children's Book Week
The Canberra Campus (Signadou) celebrated National Children's Book Week from the 24-28 August by participating in a barbecue fundraiser, book readings and activities with local primary school students.
To begin the week-long celebrations, the library staff held a barbecue fundraiser with the help of the student association and campus operations.
First year education student, Courtney, read 'Giraffes Can't Dance' to a local Year 2 class and first year student, Kirrily, ran a workshop on dancing and moving like animals.
The money raised throughout the week will go towards purchasing literacy backpacks for children in remote Aboriginal communities.
In just four years, literacy backpacks have reached 20 remote communities and 2,200 children and their families through Ian Thorpe's Fountain for Youth charity. Each student receives suitable books, magazines and newspapers on a regular basis.
