Pope appoints ACU professor to Theological Commission

Professor Anthony Kelly CSsR, Professor of Theology at the Canberra Campus (Signadou) has been appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to the International Theological Commission for a further five years.

The commission, which helps the Holy See examine important doctrinal questions, is presided over by the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, currently Cardinal William Levada.

Consisting of no more than 30 members from different countries around the world, each is named by the Pope for a period of five years.

Professor Kelly, a priest of the Redemptorist Order, was first appointed to the Commission by Pope John Paul II in 2004 and is the only Australian.

β€œI am pleased to serve the Church and to represent this part of the world and our University in this way,” he said. β€œIt gives me a special sense of Catholic identity and thought.”

Professor Kelly has completed doctoral and post-doctoral studies in Rome, Toronto and Paris. Throughout his career, he has written some 20 books and over a hundred articles, while juggling the responsibilities of teaching, supervising doctoral students and working for the International Theological Commission.
