You can make a difference

Published: Wednesday 8th March 2017

Thursday 16 March is National Close the Gap Day, a day which raises awareness of the fact that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a life expectancy 10 to 17 years less than non-Indigenous Australians, due to a gap in health and socioeconomic outcomes.

In alignment with our mission and commitment to social justice, ACU is working to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to achieve their aspirations, through providing education and employment opportunities.

This includes providing supports for students through the Indigenous Higher Education Units. ACU is also implementing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Employment Strategy 2015-2017, which aims to achieve participation parity between our workforce and Australia’s Indigenous population.

Listen to Cassandra Gibbs in the clip below as she shares how ACU has supported her on her journey and explains how ACU supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to gain a tertiary education and make a difference within communities.

How you can make a difference

All ACU managers are encouraged to support the employment strategy by registering for the Hiring to Make a Change one-hour videoconference on 30 March or 9 May.

The videoconference will explore the recruitment options available that can help to attract Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates.

All staff are encouraged to attend a Cultural Awareness Workshop to learn how they can contribute to creating a welcoming and culturally safe space at ACU. These workshops are held annually in November/December. However, if you believe that your area would benefit from a tailored workshop, one can be arranged by contacting the Manager, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment, Shae Cubillo on ext 7492.
