A message from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students, Learning and Teaching), Professor Anne Cummins:
A warm welcome back to all of our staff. I hope you are feeling refreshed after the holiday break. No doubt 2018 will be another exciting and dynamic year for us.
Plans are well underway to deliver an impressive Orientation Week to welcome our new and returning students. Orientation is the perfect time to ensure our students make a strong start to university life. We want to see our students thrive personally and professionally over the course of their studies. Our Orientation program is packed with both social and academic activities, sessions and events. Students can create their own Orientation planner to learn more about their course, find out about the services and opportunities, participate in campus tours, and connect with other new students.
New Staff Referral Guide
Today marks the launch of our new Staff Referral Guide as part of the ACU Student Achievement and Retention Strategy, which is focused on giving our students the best opportunity to succeed in their studies. The new guide outlines all of the services, programs and activities on offer to our students and a web page link for staff and students to access further information on each area.
Our students come from diverse backgrounds and they will benefit from different types of support. Connecting our students to the appropriate services when they are needed is critical to their success at university. Our student facing staff play an influential role to ensure our students are aware of, and can engage with, the supports, services and activities available to them. We want our students to become involved with both their curricular and co-curricular activities to help them develop skills and knowledge, build networks and have fun. I encourage you to take time to become familiar with the new guide. You can access the guide on the ACU Learning and Teaching website and Faculties will have copies of the guide as well.
ACU Learning for Life – 2018 Major Projects
ACU Learning for Life has embarked on its second triennium with the review of the Learning for Life Framework to further strengthen the program over the next three years. The extension of the program was an endorsement of the effectiveness of the program. In 2018, in addition to other projects, ACU Learning for Life is committed to progressing the following strategic initiatives:
- A review of the University’s Graduate Attributes and the approach to their use
- The development of an ACU Microcredentialing Framework
- The enhancement of support for sessional staff
- The continued development of learning analytic policy and tools and the implementation of the ACU Learning and Teaching Enhancement Dashboard
- The development and implementation of a national approach to curriculum delivery
These projects are born out of the understanding of student expectations as well as the ongoing engagement with the Faculties, and other areas of the University to address specific objectives and support the achievement of ongoing excellence in learning and teaching and the provision of a quality student experience.
Learning and Teaching Website
The Learning and Teaching website provides comprehensive information and a range of resources to enhance your teaching expertise. These resources cover curriculum and assessment design, excellence in learning and teaching, and technology enhanced learning. You can also find out about the professional development opportunities we have developed to support you. If you are a new academic with us or returning after a break, we encourage you to register for the Introduction to Learning and Teaching Workshop (ILAT) to become familiar with the learning and teaching essentials at our University. New and existing staff can also access the online version of the ILAT to complete the self-paced professional development training modules. LEO face-to-face Professional Development Workshops also start in the last week of January and run until the start of semester one. A variety of topics will be covered and registration is important.
We are a student-centred University focused on teaching excellence, student engagement, retention and success. In the Good Universities Guide 2018, we achieved a maximum of 5 stars in the ratings for ‘Overall Experience’, ‘Skills Development’ and ‘Learner Engagement’ under the Educational Experience category.
I want to express my thanks for your continued dedication to your work and students. I wish you the very best for 2018.
Professor Anne Cummins
