What is ACU Engagement?
ACU Engagement collaborates with Faculties, Institutes and other operational units in order to achieve enhanced opportunities for our staff and students to experience community engagement that is both academically rich and exemplifies Catholic Social Teaching Principles. We work to provide opportunities for ACU staff, students, alumni and affiliates to make a contribution to their community that meets their skills, capabilities, and capacity; and to provide opportunities for our partner organisations to access the skills and resources of ACU to achieve goals that are consistent with the ACU Mission.
News from ACU Engagement
Christmas is a time of giving
The ACU community came together this festive season to support the Reverse Advent Calendar (an initiative of Campus Ministry and ACU Engagement). Through our community partnerships the donations collected from each campus were able to meet a specific local community need.
Ballarat, Brisbane and Canberra campuses collected donations for St Vincent de Paul Society Christmas Hampers. Melbourne’s donations were provided to the St Vincent de Paul Society Collingwood Food Centre and the Strathfield campus donations were collected for the St Vincent de Paul night patrol van.
In North Sydney, thanks to the great work of ACU Campus Ministry Manager Br Michael Callinan and his team, 19 hampers were delivered to families in Willmot.
Sr Sandra Perrett, our principal contact, had this to say after the donations were received:
“Willmot is one of thirteen communities in the 2770 postcode of Mount Druitt and geographically sits like a slice of pie almost taken out of the round pie shape and left to lie on its own. But the spirit of the community is anything but isolated and the annual December Festival was an excellent time for 80 adults to put their names into a draw for a Christmas Hamper."
"Thanks to the generosity of the staff of Australian Catholic University, North Sydney, a total of nineteen hampers were packed and wrapped by three willing members of the Willmot Community Group, Vicki, Marie and Robin. The baskets were filled with wonderful Christmas foods, some decorations and lots of chocolates."
"The day was heading into the mid-forties by the time the hampers were ready and the nineteen lucky winners were phoned. Some were able to make their way to the Willmot Community Hub and others asked for their hampers to be delivered. Most exclaimed that they had 'never before won anything' and all were deeply grateful to have something special for the family on Christmas Day."
"Thank you to each and every one at ACU – we wish you might have experienced first-hand the joy and gratitude of the hamper recipients,” Sr Perrett said.
