New ACU institute to analyse public policy
Published: Monday 9th May 2016
Dr Michael Casey has commenced a new appointment as the inaugural Director of ACU’s PM Glynn Institute, which will provide the Catholic community analysis of public policy issues of concern to the Church and its ministries in Australia.
Among other contributions it will make, the PM Glynn Institute will increase the resources available for Church public policy work, help ensure the place of the Church in public debate and in the wider community, and strengthen the ability of the Church to engage strategically with public policy issues.
It will support and re-inforce ACU’s well-established relationships with Church stakeholders and employers, as well as the University’s standing within the Church as an institution of established strength.
The Institute is named after Patrick McMahon Glynn (1855-1931), a Catholic constitutional lawyer and State and Federal parliamentarian from South Australia. He held a number of appointments as a minister at the State and Federal level during his career. Mr Glynn took part in the Constitutional Convention, which founded the Commonwealth of Australia, and secured the inclusion of the words “humbly relying on the blessing of Almighty God” in the preamble to the Australian Constitution. His aunt Grace Walsh (Sister Bernard) was also one of the early companions of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop, and succeeded her for a time as Superior General of the Josephites.
Dr Casey joined ACU last year as Senior Advisor Church Policy after serving for many years with His Eminence Cardinal George Pell AC, and has degrees in Arts and Law from Monash University and a PhD in Sociology from La Trobe University.
As Senior Advisor Church Policy Dr Casey has enhanced the interaction of the University with the wider Church and other stakeholders around areas of shared concern in public policy, and provided advice to the University’s leadership team on strengthening ACU’s relationships with key Catholic stakeholders. He will also continue to act as Senior Advisor Church Policy until an appointment is made to this role.
As Director of the PM Glynn Institute, Dr Casey will continue to report to the Director of Government, Policy and Strategy, and to liaise closely with Father Anthony Casamento csma, Director of Identity and Mission.
