As we celebrate NAIDOC Week, ACU has strengthened its commitment to social equity and inclusion by launching the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Employment Strategy 2018-2020.
The strategy (PDF File, 4.6 MB) builds upon existing recruitment practices and cultural supports, and also sets a strong vision for ACU to become a university of choice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
Guided by our mission and values, ACU strives for a workforce that is reflective of the communities we serve. By 2020, the strategy aims to achieve workforce participation parity, so that 3% of our staff are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
The Federal Government’s 2018 Closing the Gap report shows the urgency of this work by highlighting significant disadvantage and an ongoing employment gap. In 2016, the Indigenous employment rate was 46.6 per cent, compared with 71.8 per cent for non-Indigenous Australians. Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull says closing the employment gap is challenging, yet educational attainment is key to opening pathways to greater economic opportunities.
Over the next two years, ACU’s renewed strategy (PDF File, 4.6 MB) will work to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to attain improved educational and career outcomes with ACU by:
Attracting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates for a wide variety of roles by creating an education and employment plan for each Faculty, Institute and Directorate.
Enhancing staff capabilities across ACU to support a culturally inclusive working and learning environment, through developing a Cultural Capability Framework.
How to get involved
You can help move ACU towards its goal of being a university of choice by:
team managers can request a tailored Cultural Awareness Workshop
hiring managers can engage with the employment plan for their individual faculty, institute and directorate to explore possibilities for future recruitment activities.
