Rise of the young professor

The phenomenon of the “young professor” may be more commonplace in today’s higher education scene than in the universities of the 18th and 19th centuries says ACU academics.

"The young professor phenomenon demonstrates that, while today’s academic environment presents a variety of challenges for many would-be academics, it also offers exciting opportunities for speedy performance-based advancement," writes Michael Ondaatje, National Head of Arts, and associate professor of history and Mark Chou, associate professor of politics.

"Of course, valorising and obsessing over promotions can sometimes become vulgar and vacuous. One’s academic rank is not necessarily a measure of one’s intellectual standing. Then there’s also the important question of whether all of this is sustainable?"
