Listed below are a number of professional development programs which are offered by ACU or are available through external providers across the tertiary education sector. Staff are encouraged to review learning opportunities and to liaise with their supervisor if they are interested in participating. You can register through the links provided. Study Support

The University supports staff learning and eligible staff can apply for Study Support for a nationally-recognised award course of study from a public or private provider (subject to eligibility criteria). For more information on Study Support visit the HR website.

Australian Catholic University

ACU offers a number professional development programs for staff, run by in-house trainers. There is no cost for attendance for these programs, and all interested continuing and fixed-term staff are encouraged to register.

U@ACU Induction Workshop
Brisbane: 12 May; Melbourne: 12 May; North Sydney: 11 May; Strathfield: 10 May
This workshop is mandatory for all new staff and staff who have not yet attended this workshop.
Mental Health First Aid

This two day workshop is aimed at all staff wanting to develop their knowledge about mental health issues and how to support others in their workplace, community and personal networks.
Finance Fundamentals - Procurement
Video Conference: 20 Apr
The Finance Fundamentals sessions are designed to provide a very brief overview of Finance at ACU. We will outline fundamentals such as systems used at ACU, who to contact, and which training workshops would be relevant for your situation. For the April session, we will have a guest speaker from Finance Operations to answer queries regarding Procurement.
Time Management

Video Conference: 28 Apr

Staff are often faced with a number of work pressures and competing deadlines. It is often difficult to start and finish the required tasks without feeling the immense pressure.
Two one hour seminars, presented by video conference, which complement the Preparing for Academic Promotions Workshops are being conducted in May. These seminars have a specific focus on strategies for effective presentation of evidence of both Teaching and Research in applications for academic promotion.
Are you familiar with the components of the Academic Workload Policy and how they may relate to your role as an academic staff member? These lunchbox sessions are designed to provide information about the University’s Academic Workload Policy.

Leadership and Accountability of the Supervisor – Module 1

Supervisors in Ballarat should register for Melbourne sessions. Supervisors in Strathfield should register for North Sydney sessions.

Graduate Certificate in Catholic Studies

Available: Melbourne (multi-mode) and online in Semester 2, 2016

The Graduate Certificate in Catholic Studies (GCCS) was developed for graduate teachers who need accreditation to teach religious education in Catholic schools. For ACU staff, this course is also suitable for those who want to learn more about the Catholic tradition that underpins our organisation.
On completing the course, you will:
  • Know and understand the theological concepts fundamental to the Catholic tradition.
  • Understand the place and use of the scriptures in the Catholic tradition.
  • Know and understand the communal, sacramental, liturgical and moral dimensions of the Catholic tradition.
  • The Graduate Certificate in Catholic Studies can be used to articulate into the Master of Professional Studies in Theology.
Master of Professional Studies in Theology

Available: Nationally across all ACU campuses (multi-mode) and online in Semester 2, 2016

The new Master of Professional Studies in Theology (MPST) is ideal for professionals working in Catholic organisations who are looking to develop and enhance their leadership capacity.

For ACU staff, the MPST will allow you to build upon existing qualifications and professional experience to understand and promote the mission, identity and ethos of the Catholic Church.

The course has been designed to develop a deeper level of engagement with the discipline of theology. It provides a rich variety of international study tour opportunities, an ability to specialise in particular discipline areas, as well as a capstone research component.

Master of Business Administration (Executive)
Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne  - Six start dates in 2016

Leading Change Effectively

This is a workshop for leaders of change. Maybe you are responsible for developing and implementing the overarching change strategy, or maybe you are responsible for implementing a part of a bigger change strategy in your part of the organisation. As long as you see yourself as leading your part of the organisation through change, this program will be relevant to you.

The Hows and Whys of Process Mapping Process mapping has become increasingly important in our daily work. It is used as a way of conceptualising and communicating complex activities in an abstract, visual and concise manner. Process maps are also paramount for any process improvement initiative, system implementation and other changes.

Managing Committees And Minute Taking

The role of a committee Executive Officer in universities is not just about taking minutes, but understanding the full committee cycle, from the establishment of a committee and its Terms of Reference, to preparing agendas, taking and writing minutes, completing follow-up action items and preparing reports and agenda items.

ACU staff have free unlimited access to a vast online library of training videos at http://lynda.acu.edu.au/.  You can watch individual videos from Lynda without completing a whole course. To browse the library, log in using your ACU staff username and password. Interactive exercise sheets are also available to some topics so you can practise your new skills.
