ACU Five Minute Research Pitch winners

Published: Wednesday 26th October 2016

Congratulations to the winners of the ACU 5RP finals. Dr Catherine Bishop and Dr David Opar will be representing ACU at the national finals next month.

Those who attended the ACU finals of the Five Minute Research Pitch (5RP) were treated to eight engaging presentations from young researchers across the University.

The finalists were chosen from 24 participants who pitched their research to audiences at one of four 5RP heats held during October in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney (see the 5RP website for the heat winners).

Dr Catherine Bishop (National School of Arts) and Dr David Opar (School of Exercise Science) were chosen by the judges to represent ACU at the national finals at Southern Cross University in November. Congratulations also go to Dr Simone Dorsch (School of Physiotherapy) and Dr Peter Koval (School of Psychology) who came second in their relevant discipline groupings.

Videos of all presenters at the finals will soon be available on the 5RP website

More about the research conducted by the winners:

Dr Catherine Bishop

Catherine conducts research in Australian and New Zealand history, with a particular emphasis on race and gender. She researches and publishes about colonial businesswomen, Australian female missionaries, Aboriginal explorers and gender and heritage.

Her research projects include one on a series of post WWII internationalist youth peace forums and, as a Research Affiliate of the University of Sydney, about the International Federation of Business and Professional Women.

Dr David Opar

David's research focuses on hamstring strain injuries, specifically how best to identify individuals at risk of this injury and how rehabilitation practices can be improved. From his research, David also co-invented the NordBord, which is a field measure of eccentric hamstring strength.

Good luck at the national finals Catherine and David!
