On Monday 23 July, ACU Engagement and a group of ACU staff volunteers hosted 55 students from the Sacred Heart Primary School for three aspirational and fun art sessions, facilitated by artists, Aysha Tufa and Guled Abdulwasi. As part of the program, the children were invited to connect with their future aspirations of ‘who they can be and what they can achieve’. By drawing on the school’s approach to building student confidence and resilience, the program reflected the idea of “being your best self”. The children let their creative juices flow using paints, crayons, pencils and textas. They also used National Geographic magazines to create inspirational collages.
In the coming weeks, ACU Engagement will host an informal competition with a panel of judges, where the winning artworks will be exhibited on campus and shared with the local community and ACU staff and students.
ACU Engagement would like to thank the artists Aysha and Guled, Multicultural Arts Victoria and the School of Arts (Victoria) for the use of the wonderful creative arts studio, the Office of the Associate Vice-Chancellor (Victoria), the Facilities and Properties teams, and most importantly the amazing staff volunteers on the day who made this program a wonderful program for everyone.
Toiletry donations from the EPG Retreat
At the recent Executive Planning Group (EPG) retreat held in Sydney on 5-6 July, staff members were invited to collect the toiletry items from their hotel rooms for donation. The 118 items collected by the EPG during the retreat will be donated to Arrupe Place, a community centre run by the Jesuit Refugee Service Australia who provide support and services to refugees and others who have been displaced.
These personal hygiene items will help to meet the consistent demand for high end, high cost goods at the centre and will provide some much needed relief to members of the community in need. The theme of the retreat ‘Drawing on our Strengths’ was fitting for the staff-led initiative which highlights the strength of the ACU community in supporting those who are experiencing marginalisation or disadvantage.
