In the spirit of ACU's mission of community engagement the Sydney Finance team joined the community through a Volunteer Day and helped to remove hazards from Sydney Harbour waters and tributaries (Parramatta and Lane Cove rivers) this year. This included removing litter and debris of all kinds that gathers around the high water mark.
The Centre for Volunteering The volunteer day was organised with the Centre for Volunteering.
The Centre for Volunteering is the peak body in NSW, promoting and supporting volunteering and community participation. The Centre is a not-for-profit organisation and includes Volunteering NSW, its service delivery arm, and the School of Volunteer Management (SVM), a registered training organisation.
The Centre promotes and supports volunteering and community participation through leadership and experience in delivering services in NSW and throughout Australia, thus connect people and organisations in order to enrich the community.
Roads and Maritime Services cleans the waters and foreshores of Sydney Harbour and navigable waters of the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers.
Roads and Maritime Services has a number of statutory responsibilities with respect to improving safety and protecting the environment on the navigable waterways in NSW, including the removal of rubbish from Sydney Harbour.
The service cleans the waters and foreshores of Sydney Harbour and navigable waters of the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers. This area consists of 5,020 hectares and a combined foreshore length of 270km. This service is currently the only effective means of removing floating litter and waste from Sydney Harbour including storm water pollution, other visible debris and floating hazards to navigation.
On average more than 3,500 cubic meters of rubbish is collected per year, ranging from large objects such as trees and tyres to the debris washed into the harbour from harbour side suburbs and small items left behind on beaches and other foreshore locations by members of the public.
The ACU Finance Team helped to remove hazards from Sydney Harbour waters and tributaries (Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers). This included removing litter and debris of all kinds that gathers around the water mark. Above this level it is the responsibility of the local authority to remove litter. This is a huge problem with some 3000 cubic metres of waste being collected weekly. It is challenging and dirty work in an environment that is difficult to access. The work was very rewarding and a great one for the team. We were provided with a full induction; pick up tools, protective gloves, bags for waste and a safety briefing.
Overall, everyone had a fantastic day and exhilarating experience.
