Tip of the Week: Ask the question

Published: Wednesday 10th September 2014

Today is R U OK? Day – an event that reminds us that a conversation could change a life.  R U OK? Day began in 2009 as a means of supporting the prevention of suicide.

If your gut tells you something’s not quite right with someone, chances are that they might need a bit of extra support from the people around them. They might be acting a bit differently, seem to have a lot on their plate, or simply aren’t themselves. R U OK Day reminds us all not to ignore these signs, but to take some time to start a supportive conversation instead.

Hear from actor Hugh Jackman in the video below on why it is important to ask the question and make a conscious effort to reach out to those around us at any time of the year.

“We can all put on a brave face, a mask that everything is ok when it is not.  Sometimes a friend coming up to you saying “everything good?” can just open up an opportunity to talk,” Hugh says.

ACU campuses have also organised a series of events to support R U OK Day.
