Semi-final appearance for new ACU Rugby League Club
Published: Monday 13th April 2015
The newly formed ACU Sydney Rugby League team travelled out to Norford Park in Sefton on Saturday 28 March 2015 where they took part in a one-day pre-season competition against other universities from across Sydney.
In their first game they faced up to eventual winners UTS, but were beaten 16 to 24. However, the team went on to win their next two games, firstly beating Cumberland 22 to 20 and then defeating a strong Sydney University team 18 to 16 to qualify for the semi-finals. Unfortunately the team were defeated in their semi-final game going down to the University of Western Sydney 6 to 32.
This was the first competition for the club under coach Ben Rogers, and given the team has been training together for just over one month, it was an extremely promising start!
The club was formed earlier this year at the ACU Living and Learning Community – Miguel Cordero Residence (MCR) – in Camperdown Sydney. The team is made up of a variety of students from MCR and the North Sydney and Strathfield Campuses. Having established an agreement with Marrickville Council, the club's home ground for the 2015 season will be Marrickville Oval, with their training facilities based across from MCR at Camperdown Oval.
The team will compete in the 2nd Division of the NSWRL Tertiary Student Rugby League Competition. ACU have not had a team in this competition since the Castle Hill Campus was closed in 1998. The history of the ACU Castle Hill team is itself etched in the history of the Tertiary competition, with the team successfully winning a large number of premierships in both the 1st and 2nd grades of the competition.
Last Saturday, the ACU Sydney Rugby League Club began its charge up the competition ladder against Cumberland at Ollie West Reserve, Parramatta. Round 2 of the completition, this Saturday 18 April, will see the team will travel up to Newcastle to take on the Newcastle University Seahorses. The first home game for the team will be in Round 3 on Saturday 2 May, where they will take on the Norwest Polecast at Marrickville Oval.
The team would love the support of the ACU community and extend an invitation for you to come down and cheer them on at their first home game on Saturday 2 May.
Keep an eye out on the team's progress throughout the season on the NSW Tertiary League website and make sure you "like" the ACU Health Sport and Wellbeing page on Facebook for weekly scores and details on upcoming games.
