Professor of Modern Italian History at Bristol University and Professorial Fellow at ACU in the National School of Arts, John Foot, is visiting Australia in July. As part of his visit, Professor Foot will be chairing a one-day research workshop on the theme of psychiatric history and the history of psychiatry on 15 July 2014.
The workshop will look at the value of official psychiatric documents for historians, the asylum reform movement in Italy in the 1960s and 1970s, the closure of asylums, and anti-psychiatry. It will also examine music and the representation of mental illness in post-war Italy, and the links between motherhood and madness in a migratory context.
There will be opportunity for discussion and questions. Guest speakers include Giuseppe Finaldi (UWA), Francesco Ricatti (University of the Sunshine Coast), Hans Pols (University of Sydney) and Daniela Baratieri (UWA).
