The Quality in Acute Stroke Care (QASC) Implementation Project – a joint ACU and St Vincent’s Health Care initiative – was recently awarded the 2014 NSW Premier's Public Sector Award for Improving Performance and Accountability.
The Premier’s Awards recognise excellence in the delivery of public services to the NSW community by the public sector, not-for-profit organisations and private businesses. The Awards comprise six categories which link to the strategies set out in NSW 2021, the Government’s agenda for change in NSW.
The QASC Project was the winning submission in the Improving performance and accountability category, which recognises initiatives and projects that aim to strengthen existing systems, or enhance efficiency, accountability, workforce capacity, and community confidence in the public sector. Three other pioneering projects were finalists in the category, covering a diverse range of public health sectors including Health, Justice and Transport.
The QASC Implementation Project was led by researchers at the Nursing Research Institute (NRI), a joint initiative between St Vincent’s Health Australia (Sydney) and ACU. The project is a collaboration between the NRI, the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation, the National Stroke Foundation and 15 Local Health Districts that demonstrated significant and clinically important improvements in stroke care across the state. Specifically, the project successfully translated evidence from a randomised controlled trial into all 36 NSW stroke services and improved the management of fever, raised sugar levels and swallowing difficulties in the first 72 hours following stroke.
“This is outstanding recognition of an innovative project that highlights the importance of partnerships, translational research and evidence-based stroke patient care,” said Sandy Middleton, Director of the Nursing Research Institute, St Vincent’s Health Australia (Sydney) and ACU.
“Local Health Districts should be commended for working with organisations such as the NRI, ACI and National Stroke Foundation to improve the experience and quality of care patients receive,” she said.
