Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) provides free, voluntary small-group study sessions which are facilitated by students who have done the course previously to help students succeed in challenging subjects.
PASS is attached to first year; core unit subjects that are perceived by students as technically or conceptually difficult and that have traditionally high failure rates and high enrolment numbers.
Subject specific courses supported by a PASS unit have shown the following trends;
Improve student grades
Assist students in successfully transitioning into tertiary study
Assist students in developing independent and transferable study skills
Assist students in developing graduate employability skills
Reduce attrition rates
ACU Academic Excellence Scholarships and Faculty Prizes in 2016 were awarded to a high number of PASS Leaders.
The PASS Program attracts high achieving students in a leadership capacity and the effect of collaborating and facilitating learning with their peers also has an impact on the performance of the PASS Leader. PASS Coordinator Karen Grech was recently awarded a scholarship for her efforts.
Apply for PASS to be attached to your unit
In order to have PASS attached to your unit(s), the PASS Unit Application Form must be submitted to your Head of School and Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching (ADLT) for approval.
We would prefer a national application for each PASS unit, so please begin discussions with your national colleagues if you would like to have PASS attached to your units again in 2017 (or apply for extra units).
