New system for disposal of electronic waste

ACU has implemented a new system for disposing of electronic waste – old computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones - that not only reduces environmental impacts of disposal but also saves money and protects the University’s intellectual property.

Recycling e-waste in Australia has now become mandatory with re-cycling operators extracting valuable metals and plastics from the used electronic items.

ACU’s new system has a simple two-step process:

1. Obtain approval from your supervisor for disposal of the electronic waste

2.       Simply send an email to Servicedesk@acu.edu.au requesting the collection of electronic waste from your office or work location. Make sure you include a brief description of the items to be collected.

Once collected, IT staff will ensure the removal of any data on the item, and Campus Operations will ensure safe disposal of the e-waste to a recycling company.

This system applies to every campus, and will help the University to better account for the quantities of electronic waste it produces, and to protect any private information and intellectual property contained on the hard drives of the e-waste.

Please read the list of FAQs below for more detail on how to use the new system:

What equipment is included in this new e-waste plan? Only waste electronic items that are owned by ACU. This includes desktop computers, laptops, printers, photocopiers, Multi-Function Devices, computer monitors and mobile phones.

What equipment is not included in this new e-waste plan?  Leased electronic items are not included in this plan.

Can I take old equipment home for personal use and bypass the new process?  No. To protect the privacy of staff and students as well as the intellectual property of ACU, these items cannot be removed from the University.

How do I organise an e-waste pick-up for my workplace?

 1.  Obtain a signed Asset Disposal form from your supervisor, approving the disposal of the electronic waste and keep it ready for collection by Properties along with the asset.

 2.       Simply send an email to Servicedesk@acu.edu.au requesting the collection of electronic waste from your office or work location. Make sure you include a brief description of the items to be collected.

 3.       Properties will schedule a date and time for collection of asset.

Once the asset is disposed, the service request will be closed.
