Dr Jiesi Guo, Research Fellow at the Institute of Positive Psychology & Education (IPPE) at Australian Catholic University, has been announced the 2017 winner of the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) Advanced Studies of National Databases (ASOND) special interest group.
Dr Guo received the prestigious honour for his dissertation, The Relations among Academic Motivation, Self-Concept, Aspirations, and Choices: Integrating Expectancy-Value and Academic Self-Concept Theory.
His award-winning thesis seeks to identify the psychological mechanisms that underlie gendered career choices and gender disparities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects among school-age children.
Speaking of his win, Dr Guo said, “I am honoured to be chosen as the recipient of this award –particularly by an organisation which has been advancing knowledge about education for over a century.
“Education has always been a great passion of mine. When I was working as a high school maths teacher, I noticed a great disparity in STEM subject uptake between my male and female students. There was a vast underrepresentation of females in STEM classes, despite them achieving the same marks as their male counterparts.
“I was intrigued to know why this was. I wanted to understand why this gap existed,” added Dr Guo.
Dr Guo hopes that his work will enhance the design of intervention programs intended to influence STEM achievement among females in schools across the globe.
The AERA ASOND Outstanding Dissertation Award recognises dissertations that make outstanding contributions to educational and/or social science research using national databases.
The ASOND Executive Committee praised the former high school teacher’s use of a strong conceptual framework, including his examination of multiple datasets across multiple cultures.
The award will be presented to Dr Guo at the 2018 AREA Annual meeting held in New York, when he will also present the findings of his dissertation.
