Helping students to love learning

Published: Wednesday 28th January 2015

More than 30 Grade 5 and 6 students descended upon the Ballarat Campus last week to participate in the inaugural weeklong program Kids at University – Our Colourful World.

Designed to develop a love of learning, the program started on Monday 19 January and finished on Friday 23 January.

Students from Woady Yaloak Primary School, St Malachys Edenhope, Maryborough Education Centre and Invermay Primary School participated in a range of workshops and activities including:

  • Icebreakers getting to know those around you
  • Science, Maths and Literacy workshop
  • PE games
  • Movies at Regent mulitplex
  • Visit to Sovereign Hill and Kryal Castle
  • Trivia night
  • Amazing race around ACU campus
  • Imagination activity

The week was designed to be fun and engaging, with ACU staff and students mentoring the children and staying overnight with them for the week at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat.

ACU Equity Pathways Officer Courtney Trigg said ‘this program has been introduced to develop the love of learning in young children; and to give them a taste of university life at an early stage in their schooling. We hope that it will strengthen their commitment to education and that they may consider university as an option later on”.
