Fleming QC worked as a public servant, performed National Service (1967 to 1969) and worked as a farmer before undertaking his LL.B. at the University of Queensland. He graduated in 1975 and was called to the Bar in the following year. He took silk in 1988.
Fleming QC served with the United Nations on a full-time basis from 1999 to 2002 as Prosecutor, International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and on a part-time basis in the Special Court for Sierra Leone from 2003 to 2005. He has represented many high profile clients during a life in the law.
