Disabilities and Health conditions can significantly impact on a student’s access to learning and assessment resulting in disadvantage. The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005 require Australian Education Providers to address this disadvantage with the provision of adjustments to ensure these students have equitable access to learning and to demonstrate their achievement of learning outcomes.
Once students have gathered the relevant documentation for their condition they make an appointment with a Disability Adviser. Students can upload their documentation and make an appointment online. In consultation with the student and in consideration of the health documentation the Disability Adviser develops an Education Inclusion Plan (EIP).
The Education Inclusion Plan (EIP) documents the reasonable adjustments for the student’s course of study. It takes into account the impacts of the student’s disability or health condition on learning and assessment and the inherent requirements of the course.
The student will provide their EIP to their Lecturer if they require adjustments to be implemented for their unit of study. Lecturers can also confirm the student’s with EIPs in their class by checking their class list on Banner. For more information on how to do this, please go to:
If there are any concerns about the recommended reasonable adjustments in a student’s EIP with regards to maintaining the academic integrity or inherent requirements of their unit of study, please contact the Campus Disability Adviser.
EIPS are regularly reviewed as students circumstances can change but a new EIP is not always distributed unless something has changed.
Please note that medical information forms are no longer completed by students who have conditions that may result in a health event on campus. It is an expectation that all significant health events on campus will be responded to according to the Critical Incident Management policy and procedures.
This year Disability Services are engaged in the following initiatives:
- ‘Drop ins’ of 10-15 mins from 12 to 1pm for students who have brief general enquires for the first 6 weeks of semester 1. Located in Office of Student Success.
- Disability Awareness Workshop on Thursday 24 March from 1 to 2pm room details provided on student website and screens on campus.

- Implementation and review of Inherent Requirements pilot project for specified Health Sciences courses.
- The implementation of the ACU ‘Policy and Procedures on Students with Disabilities’.
- Peer mentoring pilot projects for students with disabilities at Ballarat and Strathfield.

Staff who complete these modules will have this training noted on their staff training records. You will have until the end of 2016 to complete the training once you commence it.
