ACU Brisbane’s mouthwatering event to celebrate the University’s 25th Year Anniversary was the recent Blessing, Naming and Opening of the Saint John Paul ll Building. It was major event featuring the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, the Archbishop of Brisbane and the Premier of Queensland.
Reflecting on the speeches, Premier Palaszczuk gave a very personal account of the impact that Pope John Paull II had on her family during her early years, which was particularly salient given her Polish background; and Archbishop Mark Coleridge gave an equally personal and inspiring account of what it was like working for JPll.
Following formalities guests mingled over a High Morning Tea to continue conversations over a glass of champagne and a 25th Year Anniversary cupcake (with some participants reportedly devouring as many as 4 before being challenged by the Pastry Chef).
I hope you enjoy the short film clip below, capturing the essence of this splendid celebratory occasion by clicking here.
The launch of McAuley at Banyo’s magnificent building was not the only campus event to mark the University’s first quarter century milestone. Earlier in the year, ACU Brisbane hosted two further events including an International Seminar with Fred Keller held at the ACU Leadership Centre, titled Why Business, Why Now: Solving the World's Toughest Problems.
The second event was Linn Maxwell’s stunning performance of Hildegard of Bingen at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. In this one-woman show, international mezzo soprano Linn Maxwell gave tremendous insight (with great humour and musical prowess) into the extraordinary life of the 12th century German prophetess, healer, and composer.
A number of formal events held in Queensland highlighting our 25 year history included Graduation Mass in April, and our Graduation and Scholarship Award Ceremonies in May. Later this year we will host the much awaited Vice Chancellor/Archbishop Annual Dinner with a lively, topical debate, demonstrating (to quote His Grace) ‘the power of the table.’
And we end the year in fine style as ACU Brisbane hosts two Silver Jubilee Christmas parties – one for the University’s 60 strong executive planning group in November; and one for the 600 strong ACU Brisbane staff community in December, where we will take the opportunity to honour our campus colleagues who have served the University for the last quarter of a century.
25 years on, ACU Brisbane campus has achieved an accelerated step change that is envied by many of our competitors in Queensland - evidenced by the tremendous momentum and trajectory of growth that now exists on campus across the triple helix of learning, research and engagement. Our learning programs have successfully achieved another consecutive year of double digit growth. Our research strategy will see ACU Brisbane further extend its footprint into the Mater Hospital at Southbank and Cathedral Precinct in the CBD before the end of the year – housing the Saint Mary Mackillop Institute’s Musculoskeletal Research Centre and the Learning and Sciences Institute, Australia respectively
And this year we advance our engagement strategy by building our new flagship Student-led Health Clinic on campus which will provide increased Health services to the communities we serve.
Bon appétit, and here’s to the next 25 years!
