New international research opportunity

Published: Wednesday 8th April 2015

The Australia-Germany Research Cooperation Scheme is a joint initiative of Universities Australia and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It is funded by Universities Australia member universities and the DAAD and also acknowledges the financial and other support by the Australian Government Department of Education.

The scheme aims to foster research collaboration of the highest quality between Australia and Germany. It supports exchanges for Australian researchers from participating Australian universities and German researchers from German universities, research institutes and Fachhochschulen. The scheme will fund travel and living costs, enabling Australian researchers to visit their German counterparts and German researchers to visit Australia.

The support of early career researchers is a significant goal for this scheme. For the purpose of this scheme 'early career researcher' means:

  • A PhD student enrolled at a participating Australian university (such as ACU).
  • A researcher who has had a research masters or PhD awarded within five years from the date of the application.
  • A researcher who received his or her award more than five years before the date of the application but who, due to career interruptions, has had less than the equivalent of five cumulative years of research experience.

Through the DVC (Research), ACU will provide funding for two exchanges ($12,500/ACU student or staff member). The DAAD will fund the respective German collaborators for the equivalent amount. ACU applications will be ranked and provided to the DAAD for assessment.

Exchanges are for one or two years commencing on 1 January 2016.
