Dr. Edmund Chia of the School of Theology at ACU was elected to the Board of Directors of the Catholic Theological Society of America (CTSA) which met at Albuquerque, New Mexico in June.
Dr Chia was nominated to run for the position after a stringent vetting process where four established and internationally regarded theologians were presented to the membership as candidates for the election. Dr Chia was the first to be elected after the second round of voting when the majority of the members backed his candidacy.
The annual convention of the Catholic Theological Society of America, which has about 1500 members, brings together many of the finest Catholic theologians from the USA and Canada, but also from Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America and Australia.
It is the largest professional society of theologians in the world. Dr Chia is the first scholar from outside of North America to be elected to serve in the society which has as its purpose the promotion of studies and research in theology within the context of the Roman Catholic tradition. The Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing the work of the society.
