Raimond Gaita to deliver Blackfriars Lecture

Raimond Gaita to deliver Blackfriars Lecture

Celebrated author to close successful speaker series in Canberra.

Acclaimed author Raimond Gaita will deliver the final Blackfriars Lecture at Canberra’s Signadou Campus on Tuesday 23 September at 5.30pm.

The lecture caps off a successful year for the lecture series, with its theme in 2014 being Human Rights and Human Dignity. Speakers have included Human Rights Commissioner Mr Tim Wilson; United Nations Consultant and Advisor on Human Rights and Human Trafficking Dr Anne Gallagher; Researcher, author and co-producer of Go Back to Where You Came From Dr David Corlett; ACT Human Rights and Discrimination Commissioner Dr Helen Watchirs; and ACU Professor of Law Professor Frank Brennan.

A Professorial Fellow in the Melbourne Law School and The Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne and Emeritus Professor of Moral Philosophy at King’s College London, Professor Gaita is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.

Over the past 30 years Professor Gaita has made an outstanding contribution to contemporary analytic moral philosophy, not least for his distinctive vision of the nature of moral philosophy as an academic discipline. However the influence of his ethical thought extends through his various writings, including his acclaimed biography of his father, Romulus, My Father.

Because he believes that it is generally a good thing for philosophers to address an educated and hard-thinking lay audience as well as their colleagues, Professor Gaita has contributed extensively to public discussion about reconciliation, collective responsibility, the role of moral considerations in politics, the Holocaust, genocide, crimes against humanity, education (the nature of teaching as a vocation, the role of love in learning) and the plight of the universities.

The Blackfriars Lecture Series was established to honour the contributions of the Dominican Friars to ACU’s Canberra Campus. For 800 years the Dominican Orders have been committed to the ongoing, systematic and critical search for Truth in all its forms.
