1. Welcome

Professor Margot Hillel, Chair, welcomed all members and extended a special welcome to Professor Patrick Heaven, who attended as a member following the approval by Senate to include the Dean of Research as a member of Academic Board. Mrs Debbie Wilson, Director ACUcom and Associate Professor Nasir Butrous, Deputy Head School of Business Melbourne spoke to the submissions from ACUcom and the Faculty of Law and Business respectively. Mr Gerard Goodwin-Moore spoke on the new policy changes which were submitted from Academic Administrative Committee.

2. Report from Chair of Academic Board

The Chair extended her congratulations to Professor Anne Cummins and Professor Kevin Ashford-Rowe on the Learning and Teaching conference 2014. She highlighted the master class with Dr Larry Johnson, the keynote speakers, the involvement of academic colleagues and the launch of Learning and Teaching Framework which all contributed to its success and excellent attendance record.

She noted that this was the first time a new course, the Diploma of Nursing, had been submitted to the Board from ACUcom.

The University's response to the draft Higher Education Threshold Standards has been submitted.

The Chair is participating as a judge on both the ACU Literature Prize and on the 3- Minute Thesis heats in Melbourne.

Professor Karen Flowers, together with the members of the Board, congratulated Professor Hillel on her re-appointment by the Vice-Chancellor as Chair of the Academic Board for a further 3 years.

Professor Anne Cummins gave an update on the new student accommodation in Camperdown, the Miguel Cordero Residence.

Mr Dylan Ettridge, Student Senator gave an informative presentation on the student experience with insight into what it is to be a student at ACU in 2014.

5. Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)

The Academic Board approved:

  • Procedures for the Classification of Research Outputs
  • Research Active Status Definition
  • Research and Professional Doctorate Degree Regulations

Faculty of Law and Business

Course Changes

Academic Board approved the following:

  • The course review and curriculum plans to the Master of Business Administration for implementation at the Brisbane, Melbourne and North Sydney campuses and online from Semester 1, 2015.
  • The suspension of the Master of Business Administration (Advanced) on all campuses with immediate effect, and the subsequent discontinuation on all campuses from Semester 1, 2017.
  • The course review and curriculum plans to the Master of Business Administration (Executive) for implementation at the Brisbane, Melbourne and North Sydney campuses and online from Semester 1, 2015.
  • The course review and curriculum plans to the Master of Business Administration (Health) for implementation at the Brisbane, Melbourne and North Sydney campuses and online from Semester 1, 2015.

Faculty of Theology and Philosophy

Course Changes

Academic Board approved the following:

  • Changes to ensure that the Master of Theological Studies, Graduate Diploma in Theological Studies and Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies are compliant with the AQF for implementation nationally and online from Semester 1, 2015.
  • The course review and curriculum plan for the Graduate Certificate in Catholic Studies for implementation online and multi-mode from Semester 1, 2015.

7. Academic Board Approvals

Recommendations received by Academic Board from the Academic Administrative Committee resulted in the following rescissions and approvals:

  • The existing Principles Governing the Construction and Application of the Common Academic Calendar Policy and the document Study Periods and Guidelines for Offering Units in Standard and Non-Standard Study Periods were rescinded with immediate effect.
  • The Policy on the Construction and Application of the Common Academic Calendar, the Procedures for Construction and Application of the Common Academic Calendar and the associated Guidelines for Offering Units was approved with immediate effect.
  • The 2016 Common Academic Calendar and the Study Periods for 2016 were approved.
  • The existing Policy and Procedures on Educational Partnerships (including Guidelines on Educational Partnerships, Affiliations and Other Collaborative Arrangements) was rescinded with immediate effect.
  • The Policy on Educational Partnerships and associated Procedures for Establishment of Educational Partnerships and Affiliations was approved with immediate effect.
  • The Protocols in Relation to Joint Awards between Australian Catholic University and Other Institutions was rescinded with immediate effect
  • The Policy on Joint Awards between Australian Catholic University and Other Institutions was approved with immediate effect.
  • The existing Falsification of Documentation; Students document was rescinded with effect from 1 January 2015.
  • The Policy on Dealing with Instances of Fraudulent, Falsified or Misleading Documentation (Students) and the associated Procedures for Dealing with Instances of Fraudulent, Falsified or Misleading Documentation (Students) was approved with effect from 1 January 2015.
  • The existing Student Appeals Policy was rescinded with effect from 1 January 2015.
  • Subject to receipt of advice from the Office of General Counsel and the University Visitor the Academic Board approved the Policy on Student Appeals and the associated Procedures for Student Appeals with effect from 1 January 2015.
  • The existing Student Complaint Management Policy was rescinded with effect from 1 January 2015.
  • Subject to receipt of advice from the Office of General Counsel and the University Visitor the Academic Board approved the Policy on Student Complaint Management and the associated Procedures for Student Complaint Management with effect from 1 January 2015.
  • The amendments to the existing Guidelines for Naming and Coding of Units were approved with immediate effect.

8. Approvals by Chair of Academic Board

Academic Board noted the following Executive Approvals which had been made by the Chair of Academic Board:

  • Rescission of the Policy on Disciplinary Integrity within Courses.
  • Change to the entry requirements for Master of Religious Education.
  • Change to the entry requirements of the Master of Educational Leadership and the Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Leadership.
  • Postponement for Course Reviews for Master of Psychology (Clinical) Master of Psychology (Educational & Developmental) Bachelor of Counselling — Faculty of Health Sciences.
