This guide will tell you how to add a new question to a Quiz which has already been added to your LEO unit. To learn how to add a Quiz to your LEO unit please click here.
To add a new question to your Quiz:
- Locate your Quiz from within your LEO unit, and click on it
- Locate the Administration block. Your Administration now has ‘Quiz administration’ available as an option.
- Click on ‘Edit Quiz’
- A new page will open, titled ‘Editing quiz: [quiz name]. Click on the dropdown arrow next to the word ‘Add’. From here you will be able to select one of three options: ‘a new question’, ‘from question bank’, and ‘a random question’. Click on ‘a new question’.
- All of the available question types will be made available to you in a pop-up window. Selecting the question type will bring up a brief description of the question type. Once you have chosen the question type you want to add to your Quiz, click on ‘Add’.
- A new page will open up, titled ‘Adding a [insert question type] question’. From this page you are able to:
Select a category – Categories are useful if you want to create a Question Bank of questions you can draw from in the future. By adding your questions to a Question Bank you will be able to add the same questions to quizzes which are hosted within different LEO units.
Edit the Question name – Give your Quiz question a meaningful name. This will allow you to be able to find it more easily, should you add this question to a Question bank. Some of other the options available to you will vary according to the type of question you are adding to your Quiz.
- Avoid entering too much text when you are adding a ‘Matching’ question. This text will be available to the students in a dropdown menu, and adding a long answer can make this question type difficult to for the student to read and navigate.
- For multiple choice questions with multiple correct responses, make sure that you assign negative marks to any incorrect responses, so that students are penalized for selecting the wrong answer. If you don’t do this, students could select all of the available choices and receive 100% of the available mark, even though one of the choices was incorrect.
- In multiple choice questions, the incorrect responses are known as ‘distractors’. Try to ensure that your distractors are plausible options. This can be difficult to do!
- Be creative! Some question types, for example ‘Drag and Drop’ and ‘Multiple choice’ will allow you to use images in some of the fields. Be aware that your questions will need to abide by Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, so make sure you include an image description for students who are vision impaired and may be accessing your Quiz using a Screen reader.
By default, your Quiz will be assigned a maximum grade of 10, regardless of the number of questions you have added to your Quiz, or their weighting. You can edit the maximum grade of your Quiz, and the maximum mark for each question, via the ‘Editing quiz: [quiz name]’ page. This page can be found by clicking on your Quiz > Quiz Administration (from within the Administration block) > Edit Quiz.
You will need to ensure the total grade of your quiz questions (combined) is equal to the Maximum grade of your question (in total). For example, a quiz with two questions which each have a ‘maximum mark’ of 5, can have a maximum grade of 10.
To edit the maximum mark of your quiz questions, click on the pencil icon to the right of your quiz question on the ‘Editing quiz’ page. Hit enter once you have changed the maximum grade.
