New faces around the School of Physiotherapy
The School warmly welcomes new academic staff to the Brisbane campus:
Associate Professor Megan Dalton joins us from Central Queensland University. A/Professor Dalton developed the assessment tool used to assess all physiotherapy student clinical placements in Australia and New Zealand. Megan brings a wealth of experience to the school regarding curricula, learning and teaching and assessment.
Ms Kathleen Hall also joins the Brisbane staff in 2017. Kathleen will be the academic lead for cardiorespiratory physiotherapy teaching and curricula in Brisbane. Kathleen also continues her clinical role at The Prince Charles Hospital.
On the 21st February 2017 we met our first cohort of physiotherapy students undertaking their studies in our wonderful new facilities at the Ballarat campus. The School is very excited to see the program grow in Ballarat. A welcome event to Ballarat and regional colleagues was recently held. Professor Joe Fleming, Campus Dean, Ballarat campus provided a resounding welcome to all who attended.

Industry partners and stakeholder consultation
This year the School of Physiotherapy has initiated a new forum to consult with and promote open two-way communication with industry partners and stakeholders. The first meeting of the External Consultative Committee was held in February 2017 attended by partners from New South Wales and Queensland private and public hospitals, private practitioners and community service providers. We look forward to growing this collaboration with our partners over the next few years.
On 21 February 2017, the North Sydney campus celebrated its 5 year anniversary with an acknowledgement to its clinical partners and external stakeholders. A function was held on Level 6 at Champagnant House and was attended by clinical partners, staff and students who assisted in hosting the event. The event was well-received and our guests gave us encouraging and positive feedback on the strength of our physiotherapy program and the high calibre of our students.
Physiotherapy in Rome
Two intrepid staff members and nine starry eyed students from the School of Physiotherapy (Brisbane and Sydney campuses) took part in the inaugural intensive PHTY400 Rome unit teaching in January. We arrived in time to see the remnants of Christmas, New Year’s Eve revelry and the opportunity to partake in Epiphany and La Befana celebrations. We were also witness to the coldest week in 25 years with frozen fountains at the Vatican and throughout Rome; snow and icy cold but sunny days.
The pleasure of travel immersion was afforded to us by being based in the old quarter of Trastavere which is a hub of all things uniquely Roman - food, culture, shopping and history. The Rome Centre itself is perched halfway up the Janiculum Hill, site of the bloody battle between the Italian patriot, General Garibaldi and his men with their French rivals. The outcome of the battle precipitated a unified Italy and today offers some spectacular views of all of Rome.
We were able to walk, run and have a wonderful time getting lost in the amazing surrounds of historical Rome. The students displayed a fabulous attitude and flexibility to change their teaching and learning around the weather and to gain as much from the opportunity as they could. It was definitely living in the moment for us all.
The Rome Centre provided excellent facilities for teaching spaces as well as accommodation and dining. Both students and academics were able to participate in meaningful peer learning and the opportunity to have some frank and insightful discussions around the unit of study but also the broader themes that their community engagement opportunities presented to them such as homelessness, identity, community and dignified care of the elderly. The rich history and opportunity to immerse ourselves in Rome life was a unique experience that none of us will forget easily. Nos Vidimus, Vicimus (we came, we saw, we conquered).
