At Risk of Failing Student Process

Step One

Issues identified by you, the supervisor, the student, other workplace staff or clients/patients.

Step Two

Discuss the issues with the student, implements goals for improvement and, if possible, resolves the issues at this stage.

Step Three

If the issues are not resolved in Step Two, contact the ACU Lecturer in Charge. The ACU Lecturer in Charge will discuss the issues and possible consequences with you and the student. The situation may be resolved at this stage with minor modifications of placement expectations and responsibilities.

Step Four

If the issues are not resolved in Step Three, the ACU Lecturer in Charge consult with the you, the student and the workplace. The situation may be resolved in the following ways:

Implementation of a placement improvement plan

If a placement improvement plan is implemented, the ACU Lecturer in Charge, in consultation with you, other organisational staff and the student, will develop a written plan that outlines specific goals, time frames and outcomes to be put in place for the remainder of the placement. Together you and the Lecturer in Charge will discuss the plan with the student, outlining how it will be implemented and regularly monitored so that the student has a clear understanding of what needs to be achieved for the remainder of the placement. The student will be able to continue with the placement if they achieve the learning objectives outlined in the plan within the specified time frame. If the learning objectives are not met within this time frame, the student will be awarded a fail grade for the placement and/or unit of study.

Deferment of placement

If a student’s personal factors are impacting upon their performance during a placement, they may complete an application for Special Consideration. In accordance with ACU policy, the Special Consideration form (along with supporting documentation) must be lodged with the School office not more than five (5) working days after the conclusion of the scheduled placement. Where an application for Special Consideration is approved, students will be given the opportunity to undertake a make-up placement. Students whose application for Special Consideration is not approved will not be granted a make-up placement, and will be deemed to have failed the placement assessment component of the unit of study.

Withdrawal of student from placement for unsatisfactory, unprofessional or unsafe practice

You, the ACU Lecturer in Charge or workplace staff may withdraw a student from placement for unsatisfactory, unprofessional or unsafe practice. The ACU Assessment Policy and the ACU Assessment Procedures apply. Please consult your Professional Practice Coordinator regarding any incidents or activity which you believe may lead to a withdrawal of a student from placement.

Step Five

In the event a student decides to leave a placement, other than in exceptional circumstances that have been communicated in advance to the relevant Professional Practice Coordinator, the student will be deemed to have failed the 100% attendance requirement for placement and, as a consequence, the unit of study.

Step Six

The ACU Lecturer in Charge, the Professional Practice Coordinator and Course Coordinator will follow up and monitor the student’s progression after placement.
