Preparation and Planning

Creating a safe learning environment

It is essential to create a safe and welcoming learning environment for the students. Important first steps are to provide an organised orientation and to clearly explain your expectations and what you require of students.  This is the time that you can set the ground rules for the placement experience. This may include:

  • spending time clarifying learning objectives;
  • familiarizing yourself with the assessment requirements;
  • setting up learning experiences; and
  • allocating adequate time to direct the student's learning and assessment.

Pre-placement activities

We have created a Pre-Placement Checklist that may prove useful for your pre-placement planning.

Student orientation planning

Make sure you have a clear understanding of the student assessment requirements. Some disciplines require a pre-placement interview or conversation. This provides a good opportunity to get to know the student and to set the scene for placement going ahead.
