ACU produces around 750 tonnes of waste per year and diverts around 55% of that total away from landfill, the most damaging form of waste treatment.
The waste diverted from landfill is sent either to a recycling facility or to a specialised facility to generate energy.
Ninety-five percent of ACU’s diverted waste is sent to recycling facilities for sorting and on-selling to manufacturers in Australia and abroad. Those manufacturers will turn the recycled material into new products.
The remaining five percent of ACU’s diverted waste is sent to specialised facilities that extract energy from the rapid decomposition of the waste.
By 2019, ACU aims to divert 70% of its total waste generation away from landfill to more sustainable uses, such as recycling and energy generation. When it achieves this target, ACU will have one of the highest rates of waste diversion among all Australian Universities.
