TIPS AND TRICKS FOR WEB USERS

Writing meaningful link text
The key things to remember about links in order of importance are:

1 Links must accurately describe the web page to which they link.

Do not use words such as “more” or “click here” on their own as links. They will lose their context in a Screen Reader*. “More” what? Pick two words from the title and make it - ‘More on (two words from the title)’. In this way, the link won’t lose its context.

* A Screen Reader is a software application that attempts to identify and interpret what is being displayed on the screen. This interpretation is then re-presented to the user with text-to-speech, sound icons, or a Braille output device.

Incorrect - For further information see: www.acu.edu.au
Correct - Visit www.acu.edu.au for further information.

2 Avoid having links that use the same link text on the same page. Try to limit link text to a maximum of four words unless the title of the document is the text being linked.

3 Where possible use keywords in your link description. Place important words at the front of the link.

Information should not direct students to a hyperlink, as the hyperlink is by nature a web page. This makes the directions given in the following 'incorrect' example redundant.

Incorrect - Go to the following webpage Graduation Fees and Guest Tickets for detailed information about registration, payment and costs associated with attending your graduation ceremony and purchasing additional tickets.

Correct - View Graduation Fees and Guest Tickets for detailed information about registration, payment and costs associated with attending your graduation ceremony and purchasing additional tickets.
