Exam Tips for Multiple Choice Answer Questions

Preparation

  • Study materials thoroughly.
  • Work on a systematic, daily and weekly basis.
  • Plan to revise your notes as many as five or six times.
  • Strive to absorb facts, figures, dates and concepts.
  • Learn as much as possible about the examination - number of questions, differential weighting of sections of the examination, special conditions.

In the Examination

  • Don't linger on particular items. Answer the questions that are known first and then return to those you're not sure about when time permits.
  • If there is no penalty for guessing, make intuitive guesses about the correct answer rather than not making a response. However, if there is a penalty for getting the wrong answer, then don't guess when you're not certain.
  • When reading questions, underline the key terms to focus your attention on the specific issues being questioned. Watch out for key words such as 'always', 'never', 'all', 'none', 'sometimes', 'best', 'least', etc. - these qualifiers may determine the accuracy of the statement.
  • Be careful of your interpretation of critical words.
  • Make marginal notes on the question sheet.
  • Do not change answers unless you know that your recorded answers are incorrect.
  • Leave yourself time at the end of the examination to check your answer sheet to see if you have recorded your answers correctly.
