FAQ057

What images can I use in my PowerPoint presentations?

  • Images scanned from hardcopy book, journal or newspaper (including book covers, cartoons)
    • provided they are not commercially available separately
  • Images downloaded from the Internet
    • no restrictions though you should keep a record of the source, creator (if known) – this will be helpful if you wish to use the images in Blackboard (in which case you will need to use the image reference list).
  • Images taken from a licensed online journal or database subscribed to by the University Library
    • provided the licence terms and conditions do not prohibit their use for educational purposes.
    • you should also keep a record of the source, creator (if known) – this will be helpful if you wish to use the images in Blackboard (in which case you will need to use the image reference list).
  • Images taken from licensed websites (e.g. where you have access via your own subscription or membership)
    • provided the licence terms and conditions do not prohibit their use for educational purposes.
  • Images taken from publishers resources e.g. website or CD/DVD
    • provided the licence terms and conditions do not prohibit their use for educational purposes. (NB: Licences will almost certainly prohibit copying the CD’s content to the Web, but this prohibition can reasonably be interpreted as not intended to prevent the recording and uploading to Blackboard of a PowerPoint presentation that includes resource images.)
