1.1 The use of ePortfolios in teaching is generally formative in nature and focuses on professional development of students through the use of self-evaluation and reflection.
1.2 ePortfolios can be used as valuable resources that –
(a) contribute to learning and teaching, the promotion of lifelong learning and embedding learner-centred pedagogies;
(b) assist in embedding the graduate attributes into the curriculum and into teaching and assessment practices;
(c) assist staff to gain deeper, more rounded insights into their students, in order to enable the provision of individualised academic advice.
In particular, ePortfolios can be used for purposes such as to –
(a) distribute information to students;
(b) provide feedback to students on assessment tasks and on progress generally;
(c) communicate with and support students undertaking professional experience and/or community engagement placements;
(d) coordinate project or group work being undertaken by students;
(e) record assessment outcomes.
1.3 In any case in which ePortfolios are used in teaching and assessment, the nature and extent of any requirements for their use and the manner in which they are assessed must be communicated to students in accordance with the Assessment Policy and Assessment Procedures.
2. Use for professional development purposes
2.1 Staff may use ePortfolios for a variety of professional development purposes, including to –
(a) record and reflect on their achievements in teaching, learning, research, leadership, community engagement and/or other areas of professional contribution within and beyond the University, showing development in their chosen field and/or profession;
(b) identify skills gaps through review of and reflection on their ePortfolio content;
(c) plan professional development activities;
(d) support them in processes which require evidence of their achievements, such as probation and progression requirements, performance reviews, promotion, applications for employment and University and other award and/or grant applications;
(e) work collaboratively with other staff;
(f) assist the University in collating evidence for quality audit processes;
(g) meet expectations of external bodies such as professional accreditation and/or funding agencies.
2.2 Where staff use ePortfolios for the purposes associated with their University role, they must comply with the procedures established for each activity or function as to the manner, timing and other requirements relevant to the submission of applications or data and associated processes.
