Selection of Nominees to Recommend for Award of the Honorary Degree of Master
There shall be an honorary degree of Master of Arts awarded in the University.
2.1 |
Each year the Executive Director, University Services shall invite Members, Senators and members of the Professoriate of the University to bring forward nominations of persons falling within the category described in Section 6.2.5 of Statute 6.2 who might be considered by the Senate for the award of an honorary degree of Master usually in the following year. In respect of Section 6.2.5 the level of contribution which is acceptable for the award of an honorary degree of Master would be of somewhat lesser distinction than is expected for the award of the honorary doctorate, particularly in relation to academic achievement. |
2.2 |
Each nomination should have a proposer and seconder and should be supported by sufficient documentation to demonstrate the worthiness of the case and to assist in the preparation of a citation. |
2.3 |
Nominees are not to be approached by nominators, or any other person acting for the nominators, without the approval of the Honorary Awards Committee. |
2.4 |
Both proposer and seconder must be a Member or Senator or member of the Professoriate of the University. |
|
Senate may award up to three (3) honorary degrees of Master each year, although Senate may increase the number in special circumstances. There is no presumption that three (3) awards will be made in a particular year. The award of Honorary Master of Arts shall usually be conferred at an approved graduation ceremony of the University. The honorary degree of Master should not be offered to the following persons unless they fall within the category described in Section 6.2.5 of Statute 6.2: |
6.1 |
The Honorary Awards Committee shall consider all nominations received by it for the award of the honorary degree of Master and, if appropriate, make recommendations to the Senate only when the Committee is unanimous in its view. |
6.2 |
The Committee may make whatever confidential enquiries it desires pertinent to any nomination and shall not be required to divulge its reasons for failing to recommend any candidate for such an award. |
