The Nursing Research Institute in partnership with St Vincent's Health Network Sydney, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne and the Australian Catholic University (ACU), leads multidisciplinary research to improve patient outcomes.
The NRI Research Strategic Framework 2026–2031 outlines our vision for the future and the next phase of the NRI’s development. Together with our research partners, since our establishment in 2009 to 2025, we have contributed to more than 366 publications, secured $148.3M in research funding and worked across 119 research projects.
Building on these achievements, the Framework provides a clear vision for the NRI as a national and international leader in multidisciplinary, nurse-led health services and cardiovascular research. Central to our work is a sustained commitment to implementation science to support the translation of evidence into routine clinical practice, with a focus on improving patient safety, quality and equity of care.
Guided by the strategic priorities, the Framework provides a coherent pathway for delivering high-impact research, excellence in evidence translation, strategic partnerships, and research capacity building, while strengthening the nurse researcher workforce and supporting clinician researchers and early to mid-career researchers as the next generation of research leaders.
The NRI is one of Australia’s largest and most productive nursing research collaboratives with a national and international reputation for conducting rigorous research.
The NRI brings together researchers and clinicians focusing on implementation science, examining ways to promote evidence translation and change clinical practice.
Our researchers have skills in systematic reviews (qualitative and quantitative), randomised controlled trials, process evaluations, and qualitative research. We collaborate with world-class national and international researchers, multidisciplinary clinicians and policy makers.
Our implementation science research focuses on health systems and clinician behaviour change for improved patient assessment, communication, stroke management, pressure injury prevention and treatment, hospital-acquired complications, and de-implementation of low-value nursing care.

The Nursing Research Institute is located in Sydney and Melbourne: St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and Australian Catholic University. We work collaboratively across both hospitals, and with multidisciplinary clinicians, policy makers, non-government organisations and other academic institutions, nationally and internationally.
