Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is awarded for high-level research and a contribution to knowledge in your chosen field, which may be any covered by the university. A PhD is carried out under the supervision of an academic who is an expert in the field, and is assessed on the basis of a 70,000-word thesis.

Eligibility

Academic IELTS 6.5 (including individual scores of 6.0 for all tests).

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • A Bachelor's Degree with at least second class honours, Division B, or
  • A Bachelor's Degree with 2nd Class Honours in which there is no division and the Research Committee is satisfied that the standard attained is equivalent to a H2B from ACU,or
  • A graduate of this or another tertiary education institution and has after one year's study at ACU reached in the examination period a standard equal to at least H2B,or
  • A graduate of at least two years standing and the applicant's research publications or written reports on work carried out satisfy the Academic Board that the applicant has the ability and experience to pursue the proposed course of study.

Description

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is available in all Faculties of the University and is awarded without classification on the basis of examination of a major thesis. The requirements for the degree shall be completed by submission of a thesis which demonstrates that the candidate has made a substantial contribution to learning and appreciates and understands the relationship of the candidate's own investigations to a wider field of knowledge.
