Reverend Dr Ming-cheung Michael Yeung

Reverend Dr Ming-cheung Michael Yeung was awarded an honorary doctorate from ACU National at the University's graduation ceremony at the Caritas Community Hall, Hong Kong, on 17 December 2005.

The award recognises Father Yeung's extraordinary achievements, both in relation to Caritas, the official social service agency of the Catholic Church, and to the wider community in Hong Kong.

"Father Yeung is deeply committed to Caritas and to the realisation of its unique mission 'love in the service of hope'," said ACU National Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Sheehan AO.

"He has lived a vocation of serving the most disadvantaged in society and is motivated by the belief that social cohesion relies upon equal access to education for all people."

Father Yeung joined Caritas Hong Kong in 1990 as Director of Education Services and was appointed Chief Executive Officer in 2003. In this role, Father Yeung is responsible for 240 service units covering 140 different locations, more than 4,800 full-time staff, over 10,000 volunteers and overseeing a student population of more than 120,000 a year.

Father Yeung is also the chairperson of the Governing Committees of the Canossa Hospital and the Precious Blood Hospital; Supervisor of Caritas Francis Hsu College and Caritas Bianchi College of Careers; as well as lecturing in Theology and Philosophy at the Holy Spirit Seminary. In 2003, Father Yeung was appointed to membership of the Pontifical Council of Cor Unum, making recommendations to the Holy Father on the promotion and development of the Church's work in human and social services.

ACU National values enormously its relationship with Caritas Francis Hsu College and the opportunity to provide courses of study in Hong Kong. "All of us at ACU National are delighted to be able to honour Fr Michael in this way and we also extend our warm congratulations to the graduating students," said Professor Sheehan.

The Auxiliary Bishop of Hong Kong, the Most Reverend Bishop John Hon Tong delivered the thanksgiving prayer and blessing at the ceremony.
