Do you aspire to be a professional musician? This course will prepare you with the practical skills required. It balances the practical and theoretical areas of music, leaving your career options as open as possible.
Students complete two years of both solo performance and choral conducting, and a third year of either or both. In the academic program, emphasis may be given to theoretical, historical or liturgical music studies.
Course content and structure
Course units include practical studies, choral conducting and campus choir, the history of music, the techniques and theory of music, liturgy and liturgical music.
These units will equip graduates with skills in voice or keyboard (piano, pipe organ or harpsichord). You will also gain valuable ensemble performance and skills that may be applied in school, community and church contexts. You can become a member of the Campus Choir and also gain practical experience in training a choir of your own. Units in liturgy and liturgical music cater for the needs of church musicians.
Career pathways
This course will provide you with a variety of different career options. ACU National graduates gain careers in solo performance, accompaniment, vocal and keyboard teaching, conducting, choral training, arrangement/composition, church music and solo performance. Alternatively, graduates may pursue careers in arts administration, the entertainment industry, music therapy, music publishing, broadcast media and education.
A postgraduate qualification in education will equip graduates for a teaching career. Graduates may also proceed to postgraduate study in such areas as music therapy or arts and entertainment management.
