Laura Rayner

Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours)

Laura Rayner spent three years working and travelling before university and says she found the experience of applying as a non-recent school leaver "daunting".

Laura warmed to life on campus and is full of praise for the Bachelor of Environmental Science degree and the academic staff who teach it. ACU National rates five stars for staff qualifications (Good Universities Guide 2007).

"I have fantastic lecturers who are committed and approachable. You can go and see them anytime about anything," she says.

"One of the best aspects of university for me was the field trips. We did some incredible work in exotic locations such as Fiji and closer to home in Jervis Bay. It was very practical and hands-on and those are the things most employers are looking for.

"Some courses are a bit of a push towards text books and exams and assessments. We did all of that, but it was also really important to focus on experience.

The 24-year-old from Sydney's Northern Beaches is now undertaking an honours year.

"I'm working with one of my lecturers studying tree hollows in western NSW. It's a very important aspect of conservation and I'm really looking forward to it."
