About speech pathology

Speech Pathologists are qualified health professionals who recognise the importance of communication and mealtimes as activities that enable people to participate fully in their daily lives. They work with individuals, groups, families, and communities to support the development, rehabilitation and maintenance of effective communication and feeding/swallowing skills across the lifespan. Speech Pathologists are a critical component of allied health expertise helping individuals and families to life productive and fulfilling lives.

Industry-driven

Through innovative learning activities and extensive professional practice experiences, our program will enable you to deliver speech pathology services that are person-centred, culturally-sensitive and based on the best available evidence. We will prepare you to assess, diagnose, and provide intervention and support for people exeriencing difficulties with communication (including speaking, listening, understanding language, reading, writing, stuttering and using voice) and mealtimes (feeding and swallowing), resulting from developmental, acquired or progressive conditions.

At ACU, you won’t just focus on addressing difficulties, you’ll also advocate for individuals and communities across the globe. We link your theoretical units with local and global community engagement experiences. When you study speech pathology at ACU, take advantage of our international engagement opportunities in countries such as Vietnam and India, or study on our Rome campus. "I aspire to be like my speech pathology tutors. I hope to be a knowledgeable, empathetic, and creative clinician. I want to use my passion to benefit others and make a difference.

"I would love to work in a hospital once I graduate, particularly in the paediatric ward or NICU. I love working with children, but I also love the fast paced and critical nature of an acute setting."

Consequently, it has only increased my eagerness to provide intervention for individuals who are experiencing difficulties in these areas.

"So far I have attended five professional placements, providing intervention for both paediatric and adult clients within primary schools, aged care homes and hospitals."
