The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a two year full-time (or part-time equivalent) research degree in any field covered by the University, including theology and philosophy, nursing and midwifery, education, business or arts and sciences. It is assessed on the basis of a written thesis which is submitted at the conclusion of the degree.

Important Note on Fees

Research Training Program
Commencing domestic students enrolling in a master-by-research or doctoral degree at ACU may be granted a Research Training Program Fee Offset Scholarship under the Australian Government's Research Training Program. This means that candidates are exempted from paying tuition fees.

A candidate for the degree of Master of Philosophy must comply with the Research and Professional Doctorate Degree Regulations.

An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Philosophy must have completed one of the following:

  1. An appropriate undergraduate degree with Honours at a minimum level of Second Class Division B; or
  2. Postgraduate research training (eg coursework completed to credit level or higher or a master-by-coursework degree); or
  3. Demonstrated research experience with evidence of capacity to undertake independent research work (eg a first author publication).

Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents undertaking research degrees may be eligible for RTS places which cover the tuition fees of the University.

International candidates who are not awarded an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship pay full international tuition fees.

Important Note on Fees

The Tuition fees quoted above are for commencing students in the current year who undertake a normal full-time load. Fees are reviewed annually.

Tuition fees for continuing students may increase by up to 3 percent each year for the minimum duration of the course as provided on your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE). Students who continue to study beyond the minimum duration will have the relevant annual commencing rate applied to their fees for subsequent study periods.
