Graduate Diploma in Midwifery

Do you want to enhance your midwifery knowledge, skills, expertise and leadership potential?

The Graduate Diploma in Midwifery and Master of Midwifery courses provide opportunities for students to develop new and creative approaches to midwifery care, congruent with societal and professional trends.

Opportunity is provided for registered nurses to gain a midwifery qualification, and for midwives holding a midwifery certificate to gain a postgraduate qualification. Graduates who are not already Registered/Certified Midwives will be eligible to seek registration/endorsement as midwives from the State nurse registration authority.


Summary

This course is not available for international students except in limited cases.

Eligibility

An applicant must also comply with the Admission Rules.

To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed the following prerequisites:

Entry Point 1
  1. Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent1; and
  2. eligibility for nurse registration in the state where the course is to be undertaken.

Entry Point 2

  1. Practising midwives with a Bachelor degree or equivalent2; and
  2. eligibility for midwifery registration in the state where the course is to be undertaken.

Applicants should be aware of the requirement regarding clinical practice at one of the partnership hospitals.

Victorian applicant information
The clinical practice experience component of this course is offered in partnership with a number of hospitals (listed on the M form which is located with your Direct Application link below). Therefore, Victorian applicants must apply to both ACU National, and to the hospital(s) of their choice.

Queensland and Victorian applicants
After completing your University application, by either applying online or submitting the Admissions Application form, you must also submit the M Form - Postgraduate Midwifery Additional Information with supporting documentation.

Please note the application closing dates in the above documentation. These dates differ to the Universitys advertised application closing date to allow for Course Coordinator liaison with partnering hospitals.


1An applicant who holds a diploma or certificate in nursing may apply for special admission.
2An applicant who lacks the formal prerequisite but who is licensed to practise midwifery within the state where the course is to be undertaken may apply for special admission to Entry Point 2.

Description

The course aims to prepare registered nurses for endorsement as midwives by the relevant regulatory authorities in Australia. Furthermore, opportunity is provided for midwives holding a midwifery certificate to develop and enhance their midwifery knowledge and skills. This course provides the opportunity to conceptualise new and creative approaches to midwifery care, congruent with societal and professional trends.


Professional Recognition

Graduates will be eligible to seek registration/endorsement as midwives from their state nurse registering authorities.
