Master of Applied Exercise Science (Exercise Prescription)

The Graduate Diploma in Applied Exercise Science (Exercise Prescription) and Master of Applied Exercise Science provide advanced academic programs in the discipline of Exercise Science. The postgraduate course sequence in exercise, prescription and rehabilitation involves initial entry into a Graduate Diploma in Applied Exercise Science which leads to an option to continue to the Master of Applied Exercise Science (an additional 80 credit points). The postgraduate courses aim to provide advanced professional preparation in the discipline of Exercise Science. This specialisation will provide professional training, skills, competencies and some clinical practicum hours needed for accreditation by the Australian Association of Exercise and Sports Science (AAESS). Graduates of the program will be knowledgeable in exercise prescription and committed to the professional and ethical delivery of this service.

Eligibility

An applicant must also comply with the Admission Rules.

To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed the following prerequisites:

  1. Graduate Diploma in Exercise Science; or
    1. Bachelor of Exercise Science1 or equivalent; and
    2. eligibility for Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science membership.

1An applicant who lacks the formal prerequisite but who has at least one years experience in a related area of exercise science may apply for special admission.

For international applicants, a three-year Bachelor degree in exercise science or equivalent is required.

Description

The course aims to provide an advanced professional preparation in the discipline of exercise science, in particular exercise prescription in a variety of settings. Students will gain knowledge in prescribing exercise in multiple applications across the lifespan.

This course will provide opportunities for the development of critical and reflective leadership in the planning, management and evaluation of professional exercise programs.


Course Strands

Professional Strand
The professional strand consists of two units of study. The professional strand offers the chance to develop skills in scientific and clinical report writing and awareness of the management, legal and safety requirements underpinning a clinically based business.

Discipline Strand
The discipline strand consists of four units of study. The discipline strand further develops the students discipline knowledge base in the biomechanical and ergonomic dimensions of exercise, the interactions between pharmacology and exercise, the relationship between exercise and metabolic syndromes as well as exercise and the ageing process.


English Language Requirements

Academic IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each test).
