Master of Teaching (Primary)

Do you have an undergraduate degree and aspire to become a primary school teacher?

This program provides a pre-service education for beginning teachers. Graduates are eligible for employment in Catholic, independent and/or government schools.

The course consists of studies in education and specific curriculum studies covering all teaching areas of primary schools. The course is concerned with the application of advanced knowledge and research findings to the problems, issues and challenges that face education professionals. The course aims to prepare professionals who are reflective, independent and flexible thinkers who are open to new ideas, and who will be capable of applying their knowledge and skills to improve curriculum offerings.

The course facilitates the development of reflective, educated, culturally aware and responsive individuals, able to function effectively as beginning teachers in a variety of settings and committed to their continuing professional and ethical development.

Participants will analyse the challenges and changing demands of education in the context of justice and equity, informed by Christian principles. The course will enable participants to become informed professionals who have read and analysed research and considered the implications and applications.

At the completion of the courses, graduates will have knowledge of education and the expectations of employers, in particular Catholic employing authorities; the qualities and skills required to undertake professional responsibilities and leadership roles; and an informed commitment to professional values and ethics.

Students who undertake the Master of Teaching (Primary) may also concurrently complete the Graduate Certificate in Religious Education to graduate with both awards and to gain accreditation to teach religious education in Catholic schools (refer to Religious Education).

To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed a Bachelor degree or equivalent that meets the required prerequisites for entry into the relevant teaching subject methods in the state/territory concerned. (In Queensland, students enrolled in this course who seek to teach in Catholic schools may enrol in units from the Graduate Certificate in Religious Education course and graduate with this additional award.)

In NSW, when seeking admission to a graduate entry initial teacher education program at ACU you must meet the NSW Institute of Teachers' subject content requirements which will be assessed upon application. For further information, visit: www.nswteachers.nsw.edu.au

Applicants must have an overall academic IELTS of 7.0 (with a minimum of 7.0 in all tests) plus an Australian three year Bachelor Degree or equivalent.

In NSW applicants must meet guidelines set by the NSW Institute of Teachers which require completed discipline studies in:

  • Four Key Learning Areas for two semesters;
  • Two Key Learning Areas for two semesters; and
  • One Key Learning Area for 4 semesters.

Description

The Master of Teaching (Primary) is a two-year degree course designed for applicants with an appropriate undergraduate degree and who wish to become teachers in a primary school. It provides a pre-service education for beginning teachers. Graduates are eligible for employment in Catholic, government and non-government schools. The degree requires domestic and international candidates to analyse their context and to address many socio-cultural issues that will stimulate positive interaction and dialogue between the university and the professional field.

The Master of Teaching (Primary) course provides the opportunity for two-year pre-service postgraduate study at an appropriate level of academic rigour. The course consists of studies in education and specific curriculum studies covering all teaching areas of primary schools. The course is concerned with the improvement of professional experience by the application of advanced knowledge and research findings to the problems, issues and challenges that face education professionals. The course aims to prepare professionals who are reflective, independent and flexible thinkers who are open to new ideas, and who will be capable of applying their knowledge and skills to improve curriculum offerings and advance the level of education in that community.

The course facilitates within a Christian tradition, the development of reflective educated, culturally aware and responsive individuals, able to function effectively as beginning teachers in a variety of settings and committed to their continuing professional and ethical development. Participants will analyse the challenges and changing demands of education in the context of justice and equity informed by a Christian ethos. The course will enable participants to become informed professionals who have read and analysed research and considered the implications and applications.

At the completion of the courses, graduates will have an overview of education and the expectations of employers, in particular Catholic employing authorities; the qualities and skills required to undertake professional responsibilities and leadership roles; and an informed commitment to professional values and ethics.


Professional Experience

Students must complete professional experience units during which time they are required to be available full-time.

Other Prerequisites to Undertaking this Course

In order to participate in professional experience it is the responsibility of each student to ensure that they are able to successfully complete the child protection screening required in their state. A Working with Children Check is compulsory for each student. This enables participation in compulsory professional placement, a requirement for course completion. In Queensland this is called a Blue Card.

International students must also obtain and present their relevant police check from their home country and from any other country/ies where they have been domiciled for twelve months or more in the last ten years. These police checks must be sighted and authenticated before students will be permitted to undertake a professional placement in schools.


English Language Requirements

IELTS with an overall score of 7.0, including an individual score of 7.0 for all tests.
